    Early Life:

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the spiritual and non – Violent Political Leader.  He was born to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai at Gujarath. In May 1883, the 13-year-old Mohandas was married to 14-year-old Kasturbai Makhanji in an arranged child marriage, according to the custom of the region.

At the age of 19 years he went to London to study law and returned to India in 1891 to practice law. He couldn't find work that would give better life for him and his family, later he travelled to South Africa for his practice.

Gandhi moved South Africa in 1893, at the time the British ruled South Africa. There he was thrown off a train after disapproving to move from the First class compartment to a third class even though he bought the first – class ticket.

    Freedom Struggle:

When he accomplished to claim his rights as a British subject Gandhi was harmed.  He observed that all Indian people suffered badly by british Government. All these incidents were a turning point in his life; he put his attention to social injustice and influencing his consequential social activism. With the Help of natal Indian congress he moulded the Indian community of South Africa into a uniform political force.

He started Satyagraha -devotion to the truth. Satyagraha established with the principles of truth, nonviolence and courage. Gandhi was arrested so many times by the British for his activities in India and South Africa.  In 1915, Gandhi returned to India .

    Salt Satyagraha:

12th March 1930, Gandhiji in his boldest act of civil disobedience against British rule, began a long march to the sea in protest of the British salt tax. Gandhi and his followers eventually reached the Arabian Sea, where they made their own salt by evaporating sea water. The march, which resulted in the arrest of Gandhi and 60,000 others, earned new international respect and support for the leader and his movement. Gandhi's nonviolent methods, including dramatic hunger strikes, eventually did bring great results to his goal of Indian independence in 1947.

On 30 January 1948, Gandhi was shot while he was walking to a platform from which he was to address a prayer meeting. The assassin, Nathuram Godse, was a Hindu nationalist with links to the extremist Hindu Mahasabha, who held Gandhi responsible for weakening India by insisting upon a payment to Pakistan. Godse and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte were later tried and convicted; they were executed on 15 November 1949.

  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Born to Pan Singh and Devki Devi in 1981, Mahendra Singh Dhoni or 'Mahi' was the youngest of three children. His father, a MECON employee, moved to Ranchi from Almora, and Mahi's brother Narendra and sister Jayanti have also made their homes in Ranchi.

Dhoni married Sakshi on 4 July 2010. Sakshi Dhoni, a native of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. At the time of their marriage, she was studying Hotel Management and was working as a trainee at the Taj Bengal, Kolkata. After the retirement of Sakshi’s father from tea gardens, their family shifted to their native place, Dehradun.

Though he lists Sachin Tendulkar among his childhood idols, young Mahi was actually the goalkeeper for the football team in his school (DAV School, Ranchi), and he was likewise excellent at badminton. In fact, he was selected for the district and club level in both these sports. But all that changed when his football instructor Mr K.R. Banerjee sent him to play cricket for a local club.

There's fire in that belly, and the world can't get enough of it! Like his role models Adam Gilchrist and Tendulkar, Mahi himself has become an inspiration for millions of young Indians. His message for them: "Never give up."

    His career:

For Mahi, as for many other cricket legends, the start to his ODI career was slightly shaky, as he was run out for a duck on debut. But excellence was soon to follow, as Mahi was picked for the Pakistan ODI series. The rest is history.

In the second match of the series at Visakhapatnam, and in his fifth one-day international, Mahi scored 148 off only 123 deliveries. It was the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper, but Mahi would re-write the record before the end of the year

In the third game of the bilateral ODI series (Oct-Nov 2005) at Jaipur, Sri Lanka set India a target of 299, with keeper Kumar Sangakkara getting a century. Mahi was promoted to number three to accelerate the scoring, and did justice to his promotion in incredible fashion. He ended the game with 183* off 145 balls, playing like a 'man possessed' according to Cricinfo, and ended the series with the highest run aggregate (346) to be declared Player of the Series.

Against Pakistan in 2006, Mahi took up where he had left off. In the first match, India scored 328 in 50 overs with Mahi contributing 68. However the team lost due to the Duckworth-Lewis method. In the third game, with India in a precarious situation, Mahi rattled up 72 off just 46 balls to help India to a 2-1 series lead. The final match saw a repeat performance as he scored 77 off 56 balls to win the series for India 4-1. Shortly thereafter, Mahi overtook Australia skipper Ricky Ponting as number one in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen on April 20, 2006.

The 2006 ICC Champions Trophy was a disappointment, however, as India lost to the West Indies and Australia, though Mahi scored a half-century against the former. In the ODI series in South Africa, the script was unchanged for both Mahi and India as he scored 139 runs in four matches and India lost the series  4-0.

Leading up to the 2007 World Cup, India posted 3-1 series wins over both West Indies and Sri Lanka and Dhoni averaged over 100 in both series. However, the World Cup campaign proved disastrous, with India crashing out after losses to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and with Mahi out for a duck in both these matches.

He got over the disappointment to score 91* against Bangladesh, and had a great Afro-Asia Cup, totalling 174 runs in three matches at an average of 87.00, with a blistering 139* off 97 balls in the third game.

The biggest accomplishment of his career came in 2011 when he powered Team India to a remarkable World Cup victory with his extraordinary leadership skills that proved his worth as a successful captain. It was after a long gap that India won the Cup, thanks to a bunch of hardworking and enthusiastic cricketers led by a young and exceptionally astute skipper. He played a captain’s innings in the final against Sri Lanka, where his brilliant knock of 91 runs sealed the most memorable victory for his team and his country. He may have won the Man of the Match award in that ultimate encounter, but for a cricket-crazy nation, MS Dhoni will forever be the man who led from the front and fulfilled a billion dreams of seeing the Cup return after 28 long years.

    ODI Records:

1.On October 31, 2005 Mahi scored 183* off just 145 balls against Sri Lanka at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. The following is the list of records he set during the innings:

*The score of 183 is the highest in ODI cricket in the second innings (previous record: 153 by Lara). During the epic Aus-SA 2006 match, Herschelle Gibbs came close to the record by scoring 175.

*The innings featured 10 sixes, the most by an Indian in an Innings, and the second highest in ODI cricket (the highest is 11 by Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi).

*Mahi broke Adam Gilchrist's record of 172 for the highest score by a wicketkeeper.

*The innings set the record for the most number of runs scored in boundaries (120 - 15x4, 10x6) breaking Saeed Anwar's record. However, Herschelle Gibbs broke the record in 2006 by scoring 126 runs in boundaries (21x4, 7x6) against Australia.

*In the same match, Kumar Sangakkara scored 138*, making it the first ODI in which both wicketkeepers scored a century.

*The score of 183 equalled the highest score against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket by Sourav Ganguly during the Cricket World Cup 1999.

2.Among Indian batsmen who have played more than 50 matches, Mahi has the second highest average (43.64) behind Sachin Tendulkar (44.21). His average is also the highest amongst wicketkeepers in ODIs.

3.In June 2007, Mahi (139*) and Mahela Jayawardene (107) set a new world record of 218 runs for the sixth wicket against Africa XI during the Afro-Asia Cup.

4.Mahi erased Shaun Pollock's record for the highest individual score by a number seven batsman during his unbeaten innings of 139. Incidentally, Pollock's record stood for just three days as his score of 130 came in the first match of the Afro-Asia Cup and Mahi's knock came in the third and final match of the series.

5.Mahi also holds the records of the most dismissals by an Indian wicketkeeper and (jointly with Adam Gilchrist) the international record of six dismissals in an innings (five catches and one stumping against England at Headingley, September 2, 2007).

6.He led India to victory in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 and ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

    Test Record:

Mahi's maiden century against Pakistan at Faisalabad is the fastest century scored by an Indian wicketkeeper. Internationally, only three centuries by two keepers - one by Kamran Akmal and two by Adam Gilchrist -- were faster than Mahi's 93-ball century.

    His hobbies and interests include:

Hearing music, ghazals and songs by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar
     Loves to ride bikes
Enjoys playing computer games and badminton

    Honorary doctorate:

Dhoni was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by De Montfort University in August 2011.

At this time, India's fiscal deficit was close to 8.5 per cent of the gross domestic product, the balance of payments deficit was huge and the current account deficit was close to 3.5 percent of India's GDP. India's foreign reserves barely amounted to USD$1 billion, enough to pay for a few weeks of imports, in comparison to USD$283 billion today.

Evidently, India was facing an economic crisis. At this point, the government of India sought relief from the supranational International Monetary Fund, which, while assisting India financially, imposed several conditions regarding India's economic policy. In effect, IMF-dictated policy meant that the ubiquitous Licence Raj had to be dismantled, and India's attempt at a state-controlled economy had to end. Accordingly, Singh, who had thus far been one of the most influential architects of India's socialist economy, slowly opened the Indian economy to foreign investment and business competition.

In 1993, Singh offered his resignation from the post of Finance Minister after a parliamentary investigation report criticised his ministry for not being able to anticipate a USD$1.8 billion securities scandal. Prime Minister Rao refused Singh's resignation, instead promising to punish the individuals directly accused in the report.

Singh was first elected to the upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, in 1991 and was re-elected in 2001 and 2007. From 1998 to 2004, while the Bharatiya Janata Party was in power, Singh was the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. In 1999, he contested for the Lok Sabha from South Delhi but was unable to win the seat.

A renowned economist, Singh is also regarded as one of the "greatest statesmen in Asian history". Shown here with Indian delegation at the 33rd G8 summit in Heiligendamm.

After the 2004 general elections, the Indian National Congress stunned the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) by becoming the political party with the single largest number of seats in the Lok Sabha. In a surprise move, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi declared Manmohan Singh, a technocrat, as the UPA candidate for the Prime Ministership. Despite the fact that Singh had never won a Lok Sabha seat, he "has enjoyed massive popular support, not least because he was seen by many as a clean politician untouched by the taint of corruption that has run through many Indian administrations. He took the oath as the Prime Minister of India on 22 May 2004.

Following the advice of IMF, in 1991, Singh as Finance Minister, officially freed India from the Licence Raj, source of slow economic growth and corruption in the Indian economy for decades. He liberalized the Indian economy, allowing it to speed up development dramatically. During his term as Prime Minister, Singh continued to encourage growth in the Indian market, enjoying widespread success in these matters. Singh, along with the former Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, have presided over a period where the Indian economy has grown with an 8–9% economic growth rate. In 2007, India achieved its highest GDP growth rate of 9% and became the second fastest growing major economy in the world.

Singh is now a strong supporter of globalization, seeing India's immense labor capacity as a path to delivering Indian goods in a worldwide market and eventually relieving large-scale poverty.

General Elections in India held to the 15th Lok Sabha in five phases between 16 April 2009 and 13 May 2009. The results of the election were announced on 16 May 2009. Strong showing in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh helped the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) form the new government under the incumbent Singh, who became the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962 to win re-election after completing a full five-year term. The Congress and its allies were able to put together a comfortable majority with support from 322 members out of 543 members of the House. These included those of the UPA and the external support from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other minor parties.

On 22 May 2009, Manmohan Singh was sworn in as the Prime Minister during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 2009 Indian general election was the largest democratic election in the world held to date, with an eligible electorate of 714 million.
