Google,Facebook:Have removed "lascivious content"

New Delhi: Google India and Facebook have told a Delhi court that they have removed objectionable content that has them accused of deliberately distributing "lascivious content".

A order in this case is expected today in a district court in Rohini. This case is in addition to another that accuses them of criminal conspiracy, in which the executives of 21 internet companies have been summoned to attend before on March 13.

Judge Praveen Singh made some strong observations during this morning's hearing, telling Google Incorporated that "Protecting your own interests is in your own hand" and that "to protect your own interests you should have been clear."

Facebook and Google previously tried to shift the onus of monitoring obscene imagery online on Internet Service Providers such as Bharti Airtel, BSNL and Reliance saying that under their licence conditions, they were liable to block it. Lawyers representing Google also said that Section 79 of the Indian IT Act had granted protection to websites (like social networks) and tinkering with content would remove the protection they had been granted.
